There are dozens of Macy's stores across the United States, so why does this one merrit our attention? Because of its historic and cultural significance. This is the first Macy's, located on Herald Square, which was named for the late New York Herald newspaper. It was businessman Rowland Hussey Macy who made it possible. He started a small store about 20 blocks away in 1857. It grew into what we would recognize as the modern-day department store, and eventually engulfed ten neighboring buildings. It was in 1902 -- well after the death of its founder -- that Macy's moved to its present location on Herald Square. The building is covered with subtle historical details. It sports the original statues that have guarded the 34th street entrance for more than 100 years. The Macy's red star logo is derived from a tatoo that R.H. Macy had. There used to be a plaque at the main entrance honoring Isadore and Ida Straus, who died when the Titanic sank in the north Atlantic. It was Isadore who was responsible for Macy's moving from 14th Street to Herald Square. Over time Macy's has become ingraned in American culture through its annual Thanksgiving parade, and the film "Miracle on 34th Street." Sponsored by: NeighborCity.com Quick Facts
